An American Gladiator, a newspaper publisher, a branding expert, and a dog girl are among colorful and diverse Blazing Star Finalists who will show you what it’s like to Take Charge Live Large when they take center stage at MAPcon & TBOY.
They join an array of speakers and honorees at the MAPcon & TBOY Conference Friday, October 7 at the Renaissance Austin. KVUE Anchor Terri Gruca will moderate. Ally Davidson, American Gladiator Champion, Owner of Camp Gladiator, Kid Gladiator & Gladiator Games, KVUE News Fitness Expert
After surviving a ski accident that broke her neck, Ally went on to compete and win in the reality show American Gladiator. That spurred her to start her own boot camps, which mushroomed to more than 100 locations across Texas in three years, making Camp Gladiator the largest and fastest-growing adult fitness boot camp in the nation.
Lori DeVillez, Founder and Executive Director, Austin Pregnancy Resource Center
After seven years of dreaming it, Lori opened a pregnancy resource center near UT to help women in need. Six years later, eight centers throughout the community offer services ranging from sonograms to clothing to mentoring – all free of charge. The newest provides computer and life skills classes, an internet café, resale shop and health care.

Self-made and savvy, Marie launched her drive to the top in retail. She then became a star performer at Aus-Tex, one of Austin’s largest printers, bringing in sales of $40 million. Owners Marie and John Eastty bought and renovated the Celis Brewery, transforming it into a showplace printing facility. Numerous awards include the national Benjamin Franklin ”Benny”. Marie supports the Former Texas Ranger Foundation and the Humane Society
Courtney Emken, Owner, DogBoy Dog Ranch
Her license plate reads “Dogirl” and the energetic brunette with the dazzling smile embraces her nickname at “The Kennel That Cares”. She grew the 15-acre family-owned kennel from scratch into a thriving enterprise with nearly $1 million in annual revenues and innovative services including massage and chiropractic care. Courtney led campaigns to have pets spayed and neutered and to improve conditions in animal shelters.
Beatrice Fincher, Owner, Mass Appeal
After working her way through college, Bea started and ran three businesses, traveled worldwide, lived abroad, and served on prominent boards. This award-winning trailblazer is featured in 2011 Voces Latinas, one of 50 women honored by the Austin History Center. As a PR executive, she once staged a funeral for the demise of a truck owned by a nonprofit to generate donations to buy a replacement (It worked!).
Jennifer Jane Davis Garrett, COO, Community Impact Newspapers
At a time when newspapers languish, Jennifer built an $8.5 million newspaper chain in five years. The family-owned company now publishes 12 papers in Austin, Houston and Dallas, distributing 750,000 monthly. It was named “Best Place to Work” where women make up 80% of top management and Fastest Growing Print Media by Inc. Magazine, and won 30 national awards.
Anne Pritchard Grady, President, Acclivity Performance
A nationally recognized speaker, consultant and coach, Ann confronted a life-altering experience when her son was diagnosed with mental illness. It redefined her approach to issues her clients face. Anne is an advocate and top fund raiser for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), leading a walk team called “The Little Rascals”.
Kay Morris, Founder and Executive Director, Marathon Kids
Kay wanted to share her love of running with children. What started as a grass roots initiative turned into a national phenomenon. She has appeared on CNN and CBS Evening News, and as a “Fit Nation” panelist with President Bill Clinton. The popular Marathon Kids, expected to reach a million by 2015, includes exercise, healthy eating, and schoolyard gardening.
Denise Patrick, Senior Vice President, Pierpoint Communications
Denise understands what motivates consumers to make a purchase. Her experience spearheading marketing for Halliburton and other heavy hitters made her a leading brand strategist for Pierpoint, a leading Texas-based public relations firm. She is a guest lecturer at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Houston.
Ann Webb, Owner, Skin By Ann Webb
Ann conquered poverty, acute acne and other adversity on her path to becoming the glamorous head of a $3-milliion skincare line sold internationally. She was 10 years old before being taught to read and went on to win a national public speaking title and then graduate with honors after working her way through college. Her organic skin care graces the faces of celebrities and the pages of beauty magazines.
